I'm pretty familiar with how the US handled MIA/KIA notices to next of kin, but
how did all the other major players handle it?

The British authorities sent the next-of-kin a telegram, to the
extent that people dreaded the arrival of telegrams...

It was considered normal for the commanding officer of the unit to
write later telling the family '...he suffered no pain, it was
instantaneous...'

The Hero by Siegfried Sassoon

'Jack fell as he'd have wished,' the mother said,
And folded up the letter that she'd read.
'The Colonel writes so nicely.' Something broke
In the tired voice that quavered to a choke.
She half looked up. 'We mothers are so proud
Of our dead soldiers.' Then her face was bowed.

Quietly the Brother Officer went out.
He'd told the poor old dear some gallant lies
That she would nourish all her days, no doubt
For while he coughed and mumbled, her weak eyes
Had shone with gentle triumph, brimmed with joy,
Because he'd been so brave, her glorious boy.

He thought how 'Jack', cold-footed, useless swine,
Had panicked down the trench that night the mine
Went up at Wicked Corner; how he'd tried
To get sent home, and how, at last, he died,
Blown to small bits. And no one seemed to care
Except that lonely woman with white hair.

There were failures to notify correctly sometimes.

Interesting that the "official" report says he died on July 7, yet his plane
crashed on July 17. I wonder if anyone ever researched his squadron archives to
see what he had been doing for those 10 days and why he hadn't been sent home

Any chance that could merely be a typo?

Michael
based on my reading of that website, the death was first reported on the 7th but
the wife got a letter dated the 8th and the military corrected the date. The
villagers would seem to have the date down correctly if for no other reason than
the number of witnesses.

Seeing as there were 200 pages of info it would seem that some insight could
have been gleaned about both dates and what happened between them, but all in
all I guess everyone seems to have accepted the events as stated
