I'm reading Story of USS Flier 2nd Patrol and Its Surviros" by Mr
Alvin Jacobson in the Submarine Review of the Naval Submarine League,
July 2007, p. 53. In a sidebar, Robalo Story (or what could have
happened to the FLIER survivor)
p. 62"...there are no known records if the Takao Maru made it to
Manila or transferred the prisoners to any other organization..."
When did Takao Maru sank? 1941 or 1943?
I came up with different dates from:

9 May, 1943
USS Wahoo (Cdr. D.W. Morton) torpedoes and sinks the Japanese merchant
cargo ships Takao Maru (3204 GRT) and Jimmu Maru (1912 GRT) off Kone
Zaki, northeastern Honshu, Japan in position 38º57'N, 141º49'E. (see

"...Japanese forces land on Camiguin Island and at Gonzaga and Aparri,
Luzon. Off Vigan, minesweeper W.10 is bombed and sunk by USAAF P-35;
destroyer Murasame and transport Oigawa Maru are strafed, the latter
set afire. USAAF B-17s bomb and damage light cruiser Naka and
transport Takao Maru; the latter is run aground. Off Aparri,
minesweeper W.19 is bombed and light cruiser Natori is damaged. The
B-17 is probably the one flown by Capt Colin Kelly, who is awarded the
Distinguished Service Cross, posthumously, for heroism when Japanese
fighters attack his bomber over Clark Field as he returns from his
mission..."

"...Wahoo had two successful hits, and both ships went down, Takao
Maru..."

10 December 1941:
Luzon, Philippines. The transports land troops at Pandan, near Vigan,
but are bombed and strafed by five Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortresses"and
escorting Seversky P-35A "Guardsman" and Curtiss P-40B "Kittyhawk"
fighters of the U. S. Army's Far East Air Force. During the action,
Captain Samuel H. Marrett, CO of the 34th Fighter Squadron, makes
repeated srafing passes on W-10 with his P-35 until W-10 blows up. The
force of the explosion tears a wing off Marret's P-35 and he crashes
into the sea. W-10 sinks at 17-32N, 120-22E and transports OIGAWA MARU
and TAKAO MARU are so damaged they have to be beached to facilitate
salvage. Light cruiser NAKA and destroyer MURASAME are slightly
damaged by strafing.
