As time went on the Volkssturm became more important.

How effective were these as a fighting force compared to the regular
troops?

Apparently not very effective. A lengthy article about the Volksturm is in
Wikipedia which you may have already seen but I believe if you have not
read it you will find that it will answer your question and have a lot more
